The arts, culture, and outdoor recreation are for many the cornerstones of what makes Castle Rock’s unique, family-friendly community a place to call home. Whether through community events, outdoor programs, or public art, Castle Rock invests in its residents by cultivating an enriching, entertaining, and even thought-provoking community atmosphere. Unlike its state-famous parks or trails and beautiful homes, though, Castle Rock public art is a lesser known, but equally important, perk of living in this thriving town.
Art Matters: A Castle Rock Legacy
Philip S. Miller was a banker and philanthropist from Castle Rock who loved the town and understood the importance of artistic expression and creativity. He and his wife Jerry established the Philip S. Miller Trust Fund, which contributes money annually to public art and other community programs around the town. The Public Art Commission was set up to allocate funds in purchasing and maintaining public art around Castle Rock, promoting the arts in the community and keeping Philip S. Miller’s legacy alive. The Trust Fund as well as the Public Art Commission seeks to advance the idea that art serves many purposes within a community from provoking conversation to creating character and inspiring art and artists to come. They fully believe that art should be available to everyone to enjoy and appreciate. The Philip S. Miller Trust Fund has purchased many pieces of Castle Rock public art, including sculptures, murals, tapestries, pastels, and more, that demonstrate the character and history of the town, bring joy to residents, and heighten the town’s aesthetic appeal.
Castle Rock also participates in Art Encounters, an exhibit featuring outdoor sculptures that rotates through towns in Douglas County every year. Crafted from a variety of media and designed by a number of different artists, Art Encounters in Castle Rock is also funded by the Philip S. Miller Trust Fund, and was developed to promote the arts and inspire community pride.
