Is his bedroom ceiling coated in glow-in-the-dark stars? Or is she more likely to be at her window looking through her telescope than sleeping come bedtime? Sign your kids up to discover their inner astronaut, pilot, or astrophysicist at the Air & Space Camp taking place at the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver, CO this summer.
Air & Space Camp at Wings Over the Rockies
Learning doesn’t have to stop over the summer months — Air & Space Camp makes education a priority all year round by engaging children in exciting and educational activities, tapping into their natural curiosity about the wonders of the universe, and sparking a life-long love of learning.
For a week, students ages 8-12 will learn about either aviation or space exploration through fun activities such as jumping inside the cockpit of the over 40 different real aircraft and space vehicles located in the hanger of the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum including the EB-57 Canberra. The Lunch with a Legend series introduces campers to leaders and innovators within the aerospace industry. They’ll hear first-hand experiences from pilots, astronauts, and scientists and have the opportunity to ask them questions. Students will try their hand at being aerospace engineers by troubleshooting the many issues that arise when designing and maintaining the complex equipment of rockets, gliders, robots, and space stations.
Students can enroll in Science of Flight, the morning session where they’ll experience the magic of flight by flying a plane in a simulator, watching demonstrations about air pressure and lift, and learning the basics of flying aircraft from an Academy of Model Aeronautics instructor. The afternoon session, Space Adventures, immerses campers in the mysteries of the cosmos with a trip to an inflatable planetarium, constructing and launching water rockets and finger missiles, and discovering how to program robots. Students are welcome to enroll in either session or as a full-time camper.
The 2015 Air & Space Camp will take place during these weeks:
- June 22-26
- July 6-10
- July 13-17
- July 20-24
- July 27-31
- August 3-7
Visit the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum
Summer is not the only time to learn about the history and the future of aviation and space exploration. Step inside the Wings Over the Rockies World War II-era hanger and learn about the air and spacecraft housed there. Explore the interactive space and rocketry exhibits with a space station module, an Apollo Command full-scale replica used to train astronauts, a collection of scale models and dioramas, and simulators that mimic the conditions of space.
From lectures from leading scientists to events commemorating the milestones over the 100 years since humans first took flight, the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum demonstrates what we’ve learned and reminds us of how much more there still is to know.
Wings over the Rockies is located at 7711 East Academy Boulevard in Denver, CO. Its hours are 10-5 Monday through Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday.
Once again, living in Douglas County is an enriching environment for everyone, young and old.
