The Swan Lake Show
One of the most popular and enduring classical ballets of all time, Swan Lake was composed by Russian musical legend Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1876. Via dazzling costumes and scenes, impassioned choreography by Marius Petipa, and poignant music, the ballet tells the story of the beautiful princess Odette whom an evil sorcerer turns into a swan. Odette must find a way to break the sorcerer’s curse in order to be united with her love, Prince Siegfried. Based on Russian folk tales and German stories, Swan Lake is one of the most beloved and fantastical ballets of all time, transforming even the most reluctant audience members into admirers of this elegant and powerful genre.
The Art
The ballet troupes of Russia are central to Russian heritage and culture and have been renowned across the world for over a century for their distinctly non-European style. At one time, the tsar himself personally appointed the directors of Russian ballet companies. To Russians, ballet represented an idealized way of behaving and moving—with grace and dignity.
The Players
Now, Russian ballet troupes, including the Russian National Ballet Theatre, bring Russian classics by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev such as the Nutcracker, the Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Romeo and Juliet, and of course, Swan Lake along with new, innovative modern ballets to captive audiences around the world, many of whom are newcomers to this exquisite dance form.
Originally called the Soviet National Ballet, the Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow in the 1980s and employs over 50 dancers. Bolshoi Ballet dancer Elena Radchenko became the company’s artistic director in 1994, bringing her former ballet company’s expressive, bold style and innovative creative vision to the Russian National Ballet Theatre’s performances.
